One of the best ways to stop dog aggression is to socialize your dog with other dogs when they are a young puppy. Puppies should be encouraged to spend some time with more mature dogs that are well behaved. They can then model the correct behavior from these older animals. Your puppy soon learns that other dogs are OK and that it isn’t necessary to defend their territory or protect their owner when around other animals.
Another tip is to stop and reprimand your dog as soon as they start to show signs of aggression. You should never let them get away with aggressive behavior whether it be towards other animals or even people. In some cases you may wish to use a muzzle or head collar when training your pet to stop dog aggression, but this is not recommended for long term use.
Another simple strategy is just to give proper training to your dog from the time you first bring them home. By doing this, they learn to focus on you, their master, instead of focusing on other animals that may be around. A well trained dog will listen intently to their master’s next command, even if in the vicinity of other dogs or people. Once the dog has been trained to focus, the dog can also be distracted by being trained to look for a treat when there is another dog around. The treat can be thrown to the ground and the dog can be told to find it, thus distracting the dog from the other dog and stop the dog aggression before it starts.
As the master, you are also advised to control your anxious feelings and behavior, as small as it might be, so that your pet does not take a nervous cue from you. This can help to stop dog aggression since the dog always takes its cue from his master.
